TSMC announced a $100 billion investment in US plants to boost its chip production in the United States. Taiwan Semi-Conductor Manufacturing Co., one of the world’s top AI chip producers, plans to expand its investment in advanced chip production. Additionally, the United States government plans to boost the domestic manufacture of AI chips. C.C Wei, TSMC CEO, joined the president in the White House to unveil the TSMC investment worth $100 billion.

The President stated the investment as “a tremendous move by the most powerful company in the world.” He also said that the most powerful AI chips in the world will be made right here in America. TSMC made its first investment of $65 billion in a US chip plant in 2020, making their overall investment $165 billion.
TSMC’s $100B Investment for U.S. Plant Expansion
TSMC’s total U.S. investment is set to reach $165 billion, including three new fabrication plants, two advanced packaging facilities, and a major R&D center, making it the largest foreign investment in U.S. history.
This expansion will generate hundreds of billions in semiconductor value for AI and other advanced technologies. TSMC’s investment will support 40,000 construction jobs over the next four years and create tens of thousands of high-paying, high-tech jobs in chip manufacturing and R&D. It’s also expected to boost Arizona and the U.S. economy with over $200 billion in indirect output over the next decade. This move highlights TSMC’s commitment to supporting major U.S. tech companies like Apple, NVIDIA, AMD, Broadcom, and Qualcomm.
TSMC’s Investment: A Strategy to Dodge Tariffs?
Monday’s announcement comes as the US government considers tariffs on various industries, including semiconductors, lumber, autos, and pharmaceuticals, to tackle what he views as global trade imbalances harming the US. Tariffs on chips would particularly impact Taiwan, where most of the world’s advanced wafers, especially for AI, are produced. The President has often accused Taiwan of stealing opportunities for the US semiconductor industry and threatened tariffs for foreign-produced chips.
US officials have pushed industries to focus on boosting the domestic production of chips to compete against Chinese rivals in the semiconductors and AI market. During the unveil of investment, the US President said, “By doing it here, he has no tariffs.”
TSMC Stock Update
