Instead of dying down, the craze for autonomous vehicles is at an all-time high. While people from across the globe are eagerly waiting to get their hands on an autonomous car, scientists have already gone a step further. We have already come across autonomous vehicles which are compatible on land and also in the sky. For the first time, a ship without the need of operating crew will float on the surface of the sea. Norway is the country which made a breakthrough in technology and came up with the autonomous ship. According to the announcement, this ship will be capable of sailing independently by the year of 2018.

The ship dubbed as Yara Birkeland is the first of its kind to be absolutely autonomous. Shipping executives Tesla of the Seas are in-charge of this project. This autonomous ship is currently undergoing development which is estimated to get over by next year. This ship will aim to bring out basic cost of transportation of various materials. A single trip by a cargo ship is an expensive affair as it needs at least 25 crew members along with thousands of gallons of fuel. Along with this, it is harmful to the environment as it causes pollution and uses up a lot on conventional fuel. This ship might seem to be pricey at first but it will reduce the travel cost in the long run.

The autonomous ship will have the capacity of carrying 100 shipping containers.

Advantages of this autonomous ship

Apart from being fully autonomous, this ship will also be completely electric. This means that the carbon emitted from such huge ships in tremendous quantity into the air and the sea water will come down drastically. The autonomous ship will have the capacity of carrying 100 shipping containers. Its first trip will be 37 miles long to transport fertilizer from its place of production to the Port of Larvik situated in Norway. This journey is designed in such a manner to remain in domestic waters as the International Maritime Organization will not jot down regulations for autonomous international shipping till the year of 2020.

This autonomous ship will tentatively cost around $25 million. This price is three times more than that of a usual ship. Despite its high price, it will be cheaper than the traditional ships without the expense of fuel and crew members. If everything goes as planned, this electric ship will substitute 40,000 truck drives annually. It will also result in 90 percent lower operating cost.
