Self-confidence is the crux of leadership. Followers often see the talents and accomplishments of other people as a threat. Leaders, on the other hand, see those same talents and accomplishments as an asset. A true leader is never afraid to admit that they need other people to turn their vision into reality.

Are you optimistic?

Optimism is a powerful tool. Optimistic thinking creates a condition for success. Leaders with an optimistic attitude, raise the aspirations of other people. Followers dwell on the glass half empty and how bad things are. Meanwhile, leaders see possibilities.

Are you decisive?

In the real world, leaders must make decisions at a breakneck speed. They don’t always have the luxury of time, of mulling over every possible alternative. A true leader deals with ambiguity on a daily basis and isn’t afraid to take risks even when they aren’t sure if it’s the right one. A follower, often suffer from paralysis of decision and wait for the complete picture to unravel before taking any.

Are you open to change?

Followers are happy with the status quo. They see change as troublesome and frightening. Leaders, whereas, lead change. They want constant improvement and see change as an opportunity maximizer.

Are you passionate?

Leaders love what they do. Their job isn’t what they do, but an important part of who they are as an individual. Followers, however, go to work and complete their tasks, so they can go home at the end of the day and resume their real lives.

Are you humble?

Leaders are humble, they don’t chase glory. They don’t let anybody make them feel that they are better than anyone else. They don’t hesitate in doing the dirty work when necessary. They don’t ask anyone to do their job.

Are you accountable?

Followers are quick to blame the circumstances, whereas leaders are quick to accept accountability. Leaders aren’t afraid to admit that it was their fault. They aren’t afraid that it would make them look bad.

Are you willing to learn?

Leaders, even when they have superhuman management skills, are not afraid to admit when they don’t know something. They are willing to learn something valuable from anyone who is willing to teach them. Followers are always busy trying to prove others that they’re wrong. They are ashamed of learning from a peer, superior, or a subordinate.

Leadership and followership are two different mindsets. One is proactive, and the other is reactive. One is optimistic, whereas the other is pessimistic. While one sees the possibilities, the other sees a long to-do list.
