Bosch and TomTom Introduce Radar Road Signature for Accurate Driverless Technology

We are all aware of the fact that hardware plays the most significant role in a vehicle as that is the base of all other technology. This is true to a great extent as, without hardware, one will be unable to add other advanced technology on it. Therefore the significance awarded to hardware is quite justified. In terms of autonomous cars, it is almost the other way round.  This is because one can have the necessary automotive technology for a self-driving car but if the software is not efficient enough, then all the hard work on the car goes down the drain. It is absolutely necessary for an autonomous car to have trustworthy integrated software as its absence can lead to mishaps. Such mishaps can cause damage to property as well as human life. A new project called Radar Road Signature aims to bring precision in such software.

Self-driving technology is basically a system to assist human drivers. The most crucial elements in this system are cameras and radar. Sensors provide judgment to autonomous software about its surroundings. With the help of this judgment, the style of writing can be determined. On the other hand, the cameras are the “eyes” of the software. They keep track on the surroundings in a visual manner and coordinate with the sensors for the same. But cameras have their own drawbacks. For example, images captured by these cameras may face hindrances during nighttime or rains. Apart from this, the combination of these two can further create detailed maps to enhance driverless technology.

Concept of the Radar Road Signature

As cameras have their own share of limitations, this isn’t the case with radar sensors. Such sensors stay unaffected by unruly weather or lack of light. Taking this into consideration, Bosch and TomTom decided to use such sensors for the accuracy of the driverless technology. Many similar companies believe that such a combination may result in a breakthrough for developing high-resolution maps. These maps come in handy for automated driving in particular. The need for such maps is what Radar Road Signature will cater to.

The basic concept of Radar Road Signature is that it will capture billions of reflections that are created with the help of radar signals. These radar signals bounce off objects that come in the way while driving like guard rails or road signs. Such a pattern of reflections presents a digital picture of the road along with its surrounding area. This picture is later used for creating map data to notify the car about what lies ahead. Experts believe that this may change the way autonomous cars commute. It will bring about a wave of precision and accuracy in driverless technology.
