Apple employees have listed the benefits of working from home such as better work-life balance, more inclusivity and diversity, better retention rates and most importantly no exposure to pathogens.
An internal letter by Apple employees to the CEO Tim Cook and other senior leaders of the company says that the employees are unhappy with the three days in-person requirement in offices from September onwards, according to a report by The Verge.
The employees want greater flexibility in deciding their working hours away from the office. The letter began in an Apple Slack channel for “remote work advocates” with around 2,800 members.
The Apple workers wrote, “Without the inclusivity that flexibility brings, many of us feel we have to choose between either a combination of our families, our well-being, and being empowered to do our best work, or being a part of Apple. This is a decision none of us take lightly, and a decision many would prefer not to have to make.”
Earlier this week, Tim Cook sent a note to Apple employees to the effect that from September, Apple workers will be required to spend three days in a week in office premises. Teams that required more interactions will have to even put in four or five days a week. The letter clarified that the company will see that employees at least get two day a week of remote work option. Employees will also be able to work entirely remotely for up to two weeks every year, incumbent on the approval of managers.
The employees feel that the company is overlooking their concerns and needs. It seems senior executives want the old mode of working to return but the employees are resisting the push. The reasons given are more interactions, connect and better productivity, which the letter clarifies are all well met in the present remote scenario too.
“Over the last year we often felt not just unheard, but at times actively ignored. Messages like, ‘we know many of you are eager to reconnect in person with your colleagues back in the office,’ with no messaging acknowledging that there are directly contradictory feelings amongst us feels dismissive and invalidating. Not only do many of us already feel well-connected with our colleagues worldwide, but better connected now than ever. We’ve come to look forward to working as we are now, without the daily need to return to the office. It feels like there is a disconnect between how the executive team thinks about remote / location-flexible work and the lived experiences of many of Apple’s employees.”

Recent studies by researchers bear out the fact that remote work has led to the betterment of employees, with work life balance, and an improvement in productivity. A survey by Flexjobs indicated over 65% of employees currently working from home wish to remain there, citing less time spent on commutes and financial benefits.
Benefits of more flexible work highlighted by the employees included diversity and inclusion in retention and hiring, tearing down previously-existing communication barriers, better work-life balance, better integration of existing remote workers, and reduced spread of pathogens.
“We ask for your support in enabling those who want to work remotely / in location-flexible ways to continue to do so, letting everyone figure out which work setup works best for them, their team, and their role — be it in one of our offices, from home, or a hybrid solution. We are living proof that there is no one-size-fits-all policy for people. For Inclusion and Diversity to work, we have to recognize how different we all are, and with those differences, come different needs and different ways to thrive. We feel that Apple has both the responsibility to recognize these differences, as well as the capability to fully embrace them.”
Microsoft, Google and Facebook, all have notified workers they can continue to work from home half the time or full time for the near future. Meanwhile, Twitter announced that employees can work from home “forever.”
Companies’ insistence on some days in office work mode is a result of persuading employees to stay in a city where their employer is located or return if they’ve moved away in the last year. Additionally, a fully work from home model means that companies would have to overhaul their employment and compliance and tax requirements to meet the laws.
